Social information: Age 17. Single. One child. Pregnant. Psychological test February 26, 1963. WISC performance scale IQ 61; verbal 57; full scale IQ 55.
[Redacted] at age 17 expects her second child some fifteen months following the birth of the first. She herself is an out of wedlock child of a mother whose IQ is only 51, and has received very little in the way of care. The mother has refused O’Berry placement and allows [Redacted] to roam the neighborhood and associate with older men. [Redacted] likes to play with other girls in the neighborhood. The neighborhood situation is very poor as many of the men are unemployed and spend the day “just hanging around,” with much promiscuous sexual activity between them and the younger adolescent girls. Since [Redacted] has no real guidance and supervision from her mother, sterilization will protect her against children for whom she cannot care and will restrict this third generation of individuals for whom there is no opportunity to those already born or conceived.
Diagnosis: Feebleminded
Operation will be performed by Staff Surgeon, Iredell Memorial Hospital
